Oh the things you can measure with the cat in the hat!

I thought I would share a little activity that I do with my kids during our Dr. Seuss week. We have done a lot of activities with measuring over the past few weeks and I wanted to keep that skill fresh in the students minds. What better to measure than the cat's hat. I cut a hat out of construction paper for each student that will be in the group. Then I give them various objects such as dominoes, paper clips, popsicle sticks, and cubes to measure the hat with. They also have a recording sheet that they must record their findings onto. I am including the recording sheet in this post. I will also be posting later about a money game that I made to use with my kiddos. Hope everyone has a great day!!!

Our 100th Day!

I know that I am VERY late in posting this.  I have been in quite a funk lately and I have really not been up to doing to much of anything.  BUT, the mood has past and I am back to feeling my old self.  I wanted to post a few pictures of our activities that we did on our 100th Day.  We did activities such as making 100th day hats, stringing 100 fruit loops for necklaces, finding 100 Hershey Kisses hidden in the room, and making a 100th day hash with 10 different ingredients.  This day was a lot of fun.  We even received a new friend to join our class on the 100th day!  Check out our pictures to see the smiles and fun!

100 Day of School

Tomorrow is our 100th Day of School! I found A LOT of really cute ideas on Pinterest! (I AM AN ADDICT!) One of the super cute ideas comes from a post on Helping Little Hands.  It was the idea was for a "pendent" to put on the 100 Fruit Loop Necklace.  I thought this was a great idea and was so stinkin' cute.  She didn't have a download where I could get the pendent, so I thought to myself "Hey, I can make one of those!".  So, I did.  If you think that this pendent is cute too, I am including my version as a free download.  I hope it works right!  Have a great day!!!

Snowball Fight

It rarely ever snows in South Georgia. When it does, it usually isn't enough to make snowmen, snow angels, or have a snowball fight. BUT, on Friday, we had a snowball fight in room 19! I printed sight words on sheets of white paper. The kids balled them up like snowballs.  Then the fun began. They threw the "snowballs" around the room.  When I rang the bell, they had to grab a snowball, open it up and read the sight word to their neighbor.  This was so much fun.  Check out our Smilebox video to see all of our fun!!!

Try having a snowball fight with your kids!  They will have a blast!!!

Sight Words

As I sit around, watching TV and going through all the blogs that I "stalk", I started to wonder.  At our school there is a lot of debate about how many sight words we should introduce to the students and the number that they should be held accountable for at the end of the year.  We introduce 100 sight words that include color words and number words.  At the end of the year, we would like for them to know at least all of their color and number words plus the words that we introduce from our reading series.  This comes to 72 words.  My question is "How many sight words do you introduce and how many are they expected to consistently know at the end of Kindergarten?"  I would just like to see what other teachers in other school systems are requiring of their students.
